- By 1939, Don was the managing director of the West End Stores which by this time had spread all over Cornwall. He was called up soon after his marriage to Peggy Ford opting for non-combatant status and was sent to the far east as a signalman. Captured by the Japanese he spent most of the last year of his life in a prisoner-of-war camp before dying of disease.
